Tampa Free Press: Trump Admin urged to act on pending civil rights complaint against Illinois school district

(Feb. 13, 2025): Tampa Free Press covers Southeastern Legal Foundation’s (SLF’s) calls for the Trump Department of Education to intervene in Evanston/Skokie School District 65 in Evanston, Illinois, to stop unconstitutional and unlawful civil rights violations that have been happening there for years. SLF is calling on the Department of Education to reinstate a 2020 finding that the school district violated federal law when it engaged in segregation and discrimination.

OCR launched a lengthy investigation into District 65 after a teacher alerted it that the district was stereotyping individuals by race and segregating students and teachers through affinity groups and privilege walks. Eighteen months later, in 2020, OCR determined that the district violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. But days after President Biden took office, the determination was suspended with no explanation. That meant District 65 could effectively continue discriminating against its teachers and students with zero accountability.

Now, SLF is urging the Department of Education to reinstate the 2020 ruling to protect the rights of all teachers and students in the district.
