(March 4, 2024): Southeastern Legal Foundation (SLF) Director of Legal Initiatives Cece O’Leary joined Tony Katz Today to discuss SLF’s recent lawsuit on behalf of students at the University of New Mexico (UNM). When the campus Turning Point USA chapter wanted to host conservative speaker Riley Gaines on campus to talk about transgenderism and protecting women’s sports, UNM attempted to charge the students exorbitant security fees because it was worried about Ms. Gaines’ views and the reaction of the woke mob. SLF filed a First Amendment lawsuit on behalf of the student chapter and Leadership Institute, a grassroots organization that helps students plan and promote their events.
O’Leary describes how this is a “major First Amendment issue” because the university assesses fees on a case-by-case basis, based on the individual speaking. O’Leary explains how this is blatant viewpoint and content discrimination in violation of the First Amendment.
