Restoring Constitutional Balance

Our Founding Fathers envisioned a system of government characterized by separation of powers and checks and balances. But our federal government today hardly resembles what the Founders envisioned. The federal government possesses near unlimited powers, and a permanent bureaucratic class is trying to remake America regardless of constitutional limits or the wishes of the American people.

Southeastern Legal Foundation is restoring constitutional balance to our Republic through legal challenges that uphold the Constitution’s structural restraints on governmental power and hold those in government accountable. With a 50-year history of advocating for limited government, exposing corruption, and bringing an end to the administrative state, SLF is proud to be a leader in this generational fight to restore constitutional order.

SLF is Restoring Separation of Powers

Today’s federal government has become too powerful and bloated, as bureaucracy threatens individual liberty at every turn. Separation of powers was a critical component of the original constitutional design, with the lawmaking function assigned to Congress, the politically accountable branch. Yet the administrative state, not Congress, drafts most of the laws that govern our lives today, largely insulated from political accountability. SLF is dedicated to upholding the Constitution’s structural limits on government power, ensuring separation of powers and checks and balances among the three branches.

SLF is Securing Federalism

The Constitution also ensures that the federal government’s power is contained by reserving powers to the states. Far too often, federal agencies coerce states by placing unconstitutional conditions on the receipt of federal funds. More often than not, these “strings” cross the line from serving as a means to protect the general welfare and instead actually commandeer the states in a way never intended or imagined by our Founders. Fighting alongside states, SLF works to protect the American people from the egregious overreaches of the expansive administrative state.

SLF is Ensuring Governmental Integrity

SLF is a leader in exposing government corruption and ensuring governmental integrity at all levels. Elected officials and bureaucrats are often blinded by their quest for power and control and forget about their duty and oath to uphold the Constitution. All too often, public officials abuse their considerable power by turning it to their personal or political benefit. When they do, they hide in the dark. Turning on the lights and exposing public corruption is vital to ensuring public trust. SLF asks the tough questions, seeks evidence, and holds officials accountable in court.
